Domestic
Any
electrical work carried out in your home is subject to building
regulation Part P. Which states that a competent person must carry
out the work and install, test, inspect and certify in accordance
with the current wiring regulations (BS7671 - 2008). In addition
to this, the work must be notified to the local building authority
as it is subject to Part P of the building Regulations.
This means that most other trades / DIY enthusiasts / friends
can’t legally carry out work on your home without being
A competent and B certifying and notifying their work to the local
building authority.
What is a competent person?
“A person who possesses sufficient technical knowledge,
relevant practical skills and experience for the nature of the
electrical work undertaken and is able at all times to prevent
danger and, where appropriate, injury to him/herself and others.”
(BS7671 – 2008 pg 22)
This means to be a competent person, you to have the knowledge
which would be proved by qualifications, practical skills and
experience by carrying out electrical work and by complying with
the relevant legislation and regulation preventing danger by carrying
out electrical work.
When choosing your electrical contractor, be certain they are
up to the job and don’t be afraid to ask “are you
Part P registered?. What paperwork will I receive when the job
is finished?”
